Buffalo Soldiers

B came home with this imported bison-themed snack, Hunky Dorys Buffalo chips, from the epic Butcher Block crisps wall. As promised by the packaging alone, the potato slabs were indeed “thick & chunky” with moderate ridges (for retaining the “buffalo flavour” most closely resembling that of tangy, sugary soy sauce) and an indellible crunch, which effectively beef up the salty $1.50-ish treat.

They are B’s favorite snack from the Block, along with Hunky Dorys’ other notable flava, the pungently addictive Salt & Vinegar. We always seem to have a spare bag of these crisps floating around in our pantry, just fixin’ to be chomped.
FUN FACTS (FOR A “FUN FOOD”): According to this 2007 article from the Irish Sunday Business Post, the eccentric head honcho of Hunky Dorys and Tayto brand crisps keeps a buffalo ranch near the factory alongside his home in Co. Meath, where he refers to his bison populus as “the best guard dogs anybody could have,” taunts a local reporter by threatening to make him ride one of the horned beasts, and also claims (in jest) to “kill a buffalo and let it hang for 22 days before using it to make the flavour for the crisps.” Whatta guy. In truth, no hairy mammals were harmed in the making of these mammoth chips.
