Barefoot on Queens Boulevard

At the beginning of ‘08, B’s visiting friend—NYC-to-Out-West transplant A—turned us onto the categorically CHEAP line of Cali wines Barefoot, which retail for a worship-worthy $6.99 and taste better than half the shi-shi top-shelf brands out there (believe it). Lowery Liquor & Wine Co. (on Queens Blvd. b/w 40th and 41st Sts.), an alcoholics’ oasis in the desert, recently instituted a metal closeout grocery cart (stolen?) featuring rock-bottom prices and low-budg brews. I’m sure sometimes you can bob a good deal outta the bin, but usually it’s the sugary throw-away shit that just ain’t selling.

Anyway, Lowery currently has a rather obvious assortment of Barefoot wines at stage left opposite their closeout cart, with display signage touting bottles at two-for-$9.99. SCORE!

B nabbed a bottle of the much-lauded Sauvignon Blanc (and a bottle of sweet red Shiraz to round out the deal). The Sauvignon Blanc goes down smooth… with fragrant essences of nectarine, lime, and, according to the website (but not my foolish tastebuds), “a hint of jalapeƱo.” Fascinating! We felt compelled to polish off the entire bottle promptly. And not only a steal, but this wine is fuckin’ GOOD… pairing spectacularly with the likes of asparagus, gourmet personal pan pizzas, and various species of imported Irish chocolate.
