Chocolate Rain

Last night, B and i headed for some cocoa lovin’ following a batch of Pio Pio Riko delivery rotisserie whilst watching an artsy indie flick (the most interesting scene being an opening sex-in-the-woods scenario, before the Yugoslav hitman blew porn dude’s brains all over a tree trunk)… just so happened we had ample chocolate in stock to choose from.

Tonight’s dessert festivities: a Young’s Luxury Double Chocolate Stout plucked from the original Wall of Beer at Superior Market (on Queens Blvd. b/w 40th and 41st Sts.) and a Yorkie Raisin & Biscuit Bar, courtesy of Irish deli the Butcher Block (41st St. b/w Queens Blvd. and 43rd Ave.).

The younger dude who dons dual caps as smarmy cashier and resident beer specialist at Superior recommended Young’s as their best chocolate stout in-house. Bottles (1 pint, 0.9 oz.) are in the ballpark of $5.50 each, but upon repeated sampling and in our humble opinions, WELL worth the price.

First, we split a bottle of the chocolate malt- and dark chocolate-infused ale, and were floored by the ridiculously deceptive smoothness of swigs, the rich, lingering aftertaste of legit cocoa, and the lightness of succulent beveraging on one’s tastebuds. BRAVO, Young’s! A mighty fine brew. Random interjection: perhaps pairs well with pretzels. We sipped appreciatively, battling for possession of the dark, ergonomic pint bottle until the very last, sweet drop was imbibed.

B then broke out our Brit Nestlé’s Yorkie bar, but not before taunting me in an I’m On Setanta Sports Rooney lad accent (fast forward to 3:00) with the chocolate’s rather questionable tagline: “It’s Not For Girls!” Mmhmm.

NOTE: Its UK website bio says that Yorkie was launched in 1976 as a direct competitor to confectionary overlord Cadbury’s milk chocolate varieties, and the humorous and mildly chauvinistic “It’s Not For Girls!” campaign was adopted in ‘01 because, “in today’s society, there aren’t many things that a man can look at and say that’s for him.” HA!

After reading of the chocolatier’s machismo angle, I promptly tore said Yorkie from the Manchild’s grasp and dug into its milk-creamy raisin-riddled structure, which resembles a meaty domestic Nestlé’s Chunky bar—although incorporating crunchy biscuit bits rather than peanuts, and a richer, more palate-suckling milk chocolate. Divided into an unfortunately odd number of wedges, mama was forced to quickly snarf the fifth chunk before B made his lunge… and, from an appropriating female’s perspective, every melty, finger lick was just as satisfying as the next.

For the record, Yorkie may have just overtaken Kinder Bueno and the twinkle-toed Happy Hippo as my new favorite foreign treat of choice, though, to be fair, Lindt Lindor Dark Chocolate truffles (recently liquidated, thanks to our retarded super’s inept perception of heat regulation, as well as all other things maintenance-related) have also proven big on flavor this season.
