Jonathan’s Korean Booty
…okay, this header might be a bit suspect. haha.

Post Ecua-date, B and I were still feeling intrepidous so we wandered into Jonathan Food Market (on Queens Blvd at 46th St.), where we’d previously spotted watermelon-sized avocados and an LED sign rolling Korean characters. Turns out Jonathan must hail from the big K, because the corner convenience store seemingly doubles as an Asian quick mart with loads of specialty foods and rice snacks, pre-made Korean rice wonders, kimchi, and banchan delectables.

Packages of fried eggplant, time capsule cannisters of brilliant red kimchi, and various anchovy, squid, seaweed, and rice boxes are aligned in chilled display cases.

Red bean, nut, and chewy starch squares are imported daily from a ricerie in Flushing.

Econo-sized Corn Pops-like snack bags are among the crunchy Korean junk food options…

Behind the counter, our eyes were immediately drawn to Langosta (which curiously translates from Spanish as “lobster”), a.k.a. the greatest calling card known to man. And really, from a woman’s perspective, that ass is pretty impressive. Coincidence that the neighboring card is a Hot Dog?? That Jonathan’s a funny guy…

The booty we made off with (clockwise, from left):
- B nabbed a bag of sweet-and-salty corn cones closely resembling Bugles. They were crisp and lighter than their American counterpart, however, and we inhaled with ease.
- The central brown bottle contained a rather stank cacao drink gloopy in consistency and gag-worthy in taste. Was it soy milk-based? Had we left it out of the fridge for too long? The mucus-inducing sludge was not worth our time. We chucked and kept it moving.
- The O.N.E. Amazonian coffee berry drink was a delightful find. Tasting nothing like coffee, as B astutely pointed out, the fruit juice was unique from anything we’d sampled prior, and had a bold tang and a slightly nutty aftertaste. We dig the carton, too.
- The chestnut and red bean porridge pot has yet to be eaten, though I love the vented microwaveable packaging and quaint, handheld design.
- B recognized the brown rice and raisin squares as something we’d sampled at a catered event previously. This version is bland, mealy, and has that sat-out-all-day sheen. And the green and white flats, forget about it. Tasteless wonks of gelatinous starch that more closely resembled alien excrement than a post-meal snack.
