The (Other) Wall of Beer
Deep within New Sunnyside Supermarket, a nondescript 24-hr. half-pint grocery store on 43rd Ave (b/w 43rd and 44th Sts.) with fruit marinating in bins on the sidewalk and a paltry stock of near-expired cereals, canned goods and cleaning supplies clogging the shelves, lies a drool-inducing refrigerated-section goldmine… IMPORTED BREWS!!!

Before I get into specifics, let me preface this by saying that obviously Superior Market (on Queens Blvd b/w 40th and 41st Sts.), with their window display of 22-oz. predominantly European and Eastern European grab-and-gos, is the original neighborhood Wall of Beer. And straight up, they might take the cake for overall diversity of specialty bottles. (And obviously as far as wines go, you’re kinda S-O-L without the bargain shopping cart options at Lowery Liquor & Wine.)
But for the record, the *cold* six-pack selection at New Sunnyside Supermarket, this fly-ridden enclave I’d set foot in perhaps only twice in my life, is fuckin’ impressive.
Of the imports and regional brews we noted (cause, really, who gives a shit about Anheuser-Busch):
Efes (Turkish)
Czechvar (“the Czech Budweiser”)
Kisz Bier (Czech)
Bernstein (German)
Faxe (Danish)
B’s favorite can of the day (double-wide barrel, sharp-horned, bearded viking):
Brooklyn Lager (Duh)
Brooklyn East India Pale Ale (You guessed it)
Mackeson XXX (English)
Peroni (Italian)
Fosters (Australian)
Presidente (Dominican)
Bavaria (Dutch)
Mojo India Pale Ale (Boulder, Colorado)
O’hara’s Celtic Stout (Ireland)
DAB (Dortmunder Actien—Brauerei) (German)
Old E (apparently from Milwaukee?)
Dixie (New Orleans)
Tecate (Mexican)
Modelo (Negro and Especial) (Mexican)
Tsingtao (Chinese)
Sol (Mexican, again)
Lowenbrau (German)
Hoegaarden (Belgian)
Asahi (Japanese)
Sapporo (Japanese)
Pilsner Urquell (Czech)
Southampton Ales (Long Island)
Sparks (3 kinds) (San Francisco)
We’re planning a weekend-long international sampling in the near future… perhaps we’ll get crafty and coincide countries’ beers with their World Cup qualifier matches. Any excuse to throw a few (sixers) back…
A final note from B: in a neighborhood with such a large Korean population, where the F are the Korean beers??
