Psychedelic Sushi
The sushi counter artisans at TJ Asian Bistro (on Skillman Ave. b/w 50th and 51st Sts) hooked it up last week when B and I both had Monday off and pounced on the chance to hit up lunch somewhere other than Midtown. We’ve spotted the chefs executing many wonders of modern decorum over our handful of visits, from LED balls in a martini glass to little piggies carved from half a cucumber. These guys certainly bring the dramatics! On this particular day, we figure maybe there was a little magic brownie action going on pre-lunch rush…

Above Left: Lobster Tempura Roll (big, delicious chunks of lobster in light crispy batter)
Above Right: Crystal Roll (spicy white tuna with tempura flakes, topped with white tuna slabs and miso sauce in soy paper - my favorite roll on the planet)

(the deconstructed checkerboard design is done with colored tempura flakes over drizzles of sweet caramelly sauce)

(From what we could gather, this trippy puddle incorporates spicy mayo, kiwi sauce, and teriyaki… or something like that. either way, it made eating fun.)

(B’s favorite roll, the Black Pepper Tuna… daggered by a swizzle of green tempura flakes on wasabi sauce for added fierceness)

We love TJ and his bevy of friendly staff and retardedly talented sushi masters. Despite being an irritatingly uphill trek, we hoof it on many a night for the kind of stankless quality we’ve come to rely upon from TJ’s fishies. Prices are a bit steeper for the special rolls, but eating modestly doesn’t feel nearly as good as cramming an entire $12 Kimono Roll down your gullet. G’head, try it - you can thank me later.
