Life After Death

spotted some new signage in the space formerly stanked up by the cheesesteak factory and that random pizzeria… appears queens blvd (b/w 40th and 41st streets) is fixin to have itself some mexican flair! (chips, step down.)

arriba arriba! promises “creative mexican cuisine” with its ominous red eyes, and if round-the-clock work habits are any indication, this place could be something special. behind the still papered-over windows, there seems to be a serious plaster overhaul going on… roughly a month into construction, the gutted interior has yet to take on new color or shape, but mama is putting in an official bid now for mosaic tabletops and an indoor fountain of youth. come on, arriba! wow us!

———————————-

on a much more tragic note, the OOO boutique (also on queens blvd, b/w 40th and 41st streets) has been shuttered for the past week and a half, with a “for sale” sign occupying a corner in their still elaborately decorated window. the tricky part is that close up, the sign specifies that the entire business is for sale, not just the space. imagine that. for a presumably rock bottom price, interested parties can obtain a stockpile of 90s abercrombie tees, overpriced jeans, and betty boop-emblazoned hoodies, not to mention a gaudy (yet entirely festive) holiday window display and a website side hustle. sounds like money in the bank… oh, wait. nevermind.

i’m being mean. the owners of OOO gave it their best sporting shot. but honestly, in this corner of sunnyside, we don’t want poor-man’s hipster garb; our people flock to the f’n taco truck at all hours of the night and ride-or-die through burger king like it’s goin out of style. know your surroundings… we are simple people in need of nourishment, preferrably in the form of late-night sugar highs and caffeinated chocolate bombs. give us arepas, we give you our hearts (hint, hint, arriba!). nonetheless, OOO threw one hell of an opening party this past winter, and we salute their steadfastness in the face of flatlining sales.

r.i.p., OOO. we barely knew ya.
